The Design Shift

I recently came across this fascinating image of engineers or architects at work before the era of AutoCAD. It’s incredible to think about how far the design process has evolved. Back then, everything was meticulously hand-drawn—each sketch and blueprint a tangible reflection of the designer's thought process. There's an artistry to these manual methods, where precision, creativity, and craftsmanship were carefully combined on paper. This serves as a reminder of the rich history of design and the manual skills that laid the foundation for today’s digital tools.

AutoCAD revolutionized fields like architecture, engineering, and product design by introducing digital drawing, replacing traditional hand-drawn blueprints and sketches. It brought precision, efficiency, and the ability to make quick revisions, dramatically speeding up the design and production process. This early digital tool paved the way for other technologies that have since transformed the design world.

Fast forward to today, and tools like Figma have continued this evolution. Its development is rooted in the shift toward web-based, cloud-powered design, where interactive and responsive design plays a central role. Unlike AutoCAD, Figma is about designing digital products in real-time with teams, enabling faster, more flexible workflows.

So, while AutoCAD and Figma serve different purposes, both share a common theme—changing the way we approach design, making it faster, more efficient, and more collaborative. These tools continue to push the boundaries of what's possible, each marking a significant evolution in the digital design landscape.
